There is no doubt 2020 is an exceptional year and we need to recognise the impact of the global pandemic in addition to considering insight gathered from 43,000 surveys. It would seem that many of the trends we observed over the previous 5 years are still valid but have accelerated due to the effect of the pandemic, it is likely that the future emphasis will be on people and their wellbeing rather than the workplace itself.
But in this instance the pandemic has brought office design and previously accepted working practices straight into headline news. Overnight, the adoption of agile working shifted from a steady annual upwards trend to become mainstream. With that came an unprecedented amount of both functional and personal change. Events tell us that the months of planning and preparation work usually associated with an organisation’s agile transition were compressed into days. The responsive replaced the proactive.
