Royal Liver Building: Liverpool (West Entrance)

Location: Royal Liver Building, Liverpool
Sector: Professional Services
Scope of Works: Design > Refurbishment

The Brief
A key element of the Royal Liver building refurbishment was the creation of a more effective entrance to the River Mersey frontage. The driving force behind the refurbishment was to create a vastly improved environment for existing tenants and their clients, attract potential corporate tenants and also create a formal entrance which would remain sympathetic to as well as enhance the building’s existing architecture.

The Solution
The West Entrance project involved the refurbishment of the main West Entrance and reception area, which incorporated a new glazed entrance, a DDA accessible ramp and works to the car park. Working closely with the City of Liverpool’s Conservation officers, the existing interior was stripped back, the existing features were retained and made good, and new mechanical services, quality lighting, decoration, graphics and fittings were installed to create an elegant and timeless solution. All of these elements were brought together to create a character, identity, focus and a sense of arrival appropriate to this iconic building, which relates to The Royal Liver Group, the Liver Building and the City of Liverpool.

The original marble floor was overlaid with ceramic tiles in a manner which would allow the marble to be exposed again should that be desired. The existing lifts were refurbished and some of the original features were incorporated into the design, for example, the original plaque commemorating the Royal Liver’s war heroes was replaced with a curved jesmonite wall panel in the entrance, cast with the soldiers’ names, transforming it into a feature which would be clearly seen by all who enter the building. Behind the new stone and veneer bespoke reception desk is a back-lit cast glass sculpture reflecting the river heritage of the building. The new portico has seamless glazing with integrated external lighting incorporated to create more of an impact as darkness falls on the river frontage, whilst the new curved access ramp allows easier access to the building for all.
