Leeds Building Society (Reception & Cafe): Leeds
Location: The Headrow, Leeds
Sector: Financial, Retail/ Consumer Goods
Project Size: 45,000 sq ft
Programme: 52 weeks
The Brief
The newly refurbished Head Office was to remain home to over 450 staff, providing central accommodation for the firm's branch network, call centre operations and online facilities. The re-development work, which began in July 2007, extended across all five floors, in addition to the creation of a new restaurant in the old external lightwell. The existing small entrance was on Albion Street, poorly signed and with no brand presence. A completely new entrance was formed on the more prestigious Headrow to reflect the Society’s market position. The branch had to remain open at all times during the refurbishment process despite the fact that major structural work was required.
Claremont identified an alternative location for the reception which would necessitate the removal of two small retail units and the creation of a new large structural opening. This also allowed the reception area to link to the rear of the building and back to the existing lift lobbies. The creation of the new entrance required a number of changes in level to the pavement outside and to the interior levels of the disparate spaces within the building. The existing lightwell, located well above the rear of reception, was also identified as dead space, full of redundant air-conditioning plant. Claremont designed a café at first floor level, complete with circular roof light to allow natural light to flood the space. Imagery of Yorkshire sporting heroes was used to create a strong sense of identity, and the bright colours create a lively ‘buzz’ for the users.
The Result
The new entrance and reception gives a much greater profile to the Society on the streetscape and reflects their market position as the 7th largest Building Society in the UK. The removal of the small retail units has created a sense of presence to the entrance and the clean and uncluttered aesthetic is in keeping with the contemporary office accommodation elsewhere in the building. Despite some alterations, the Building Society branch remained open for the duration of the works and disruption was kept to a minimum. The transformation of the open air service lightwell, from a storage area for plant to a fun and lively cafe completes the refurbishment and has created a considerable ‘wow factor’. The staff enjoy the colourful environment with the area being used for informal meetings as well as for light snacks and beverages.
