The Brief
Following a rigorous selection process, Claremont was brought on board to undertake the re-design and refurbishment programme for the premises which have been home to the Building Society for more than 125 years. An iconic landmark at the heart of the city’s historical infrastructure, the decision was quickly made by the company to stay in their existing premises as opposed to relocating to one of the modern developments which dominate the Leeds city skyline. The newly refurbished Head Office would remain home to over 450 staff, providing central accommodation for the firm's branch network, call centre operations and online facilities. The re-development, which began in July 2007, extended across all five floors, in addition to the creation of a new restaurant in the old external light well (as detailed in separate case study). The existing entrance was on Albion Street and a completely new entrance was formed on the more prestigious Headrow to reflect the Society’s brand position.

The Solution
Located within a conservation area, the building retains its external appearance and character, however, the current interior accommodation has been totally refurbished to provide a modern, vibrant, open plan working environment for the Leeds' staff. The existing floor plan was made up of smaller spaces linked together with little opportunity for teamwork. Claremont opened up the floors as much as possible and introduced breakout areas in the awkward spaces in order to encourage communication. biodegradable carpet and ceiling tiles. The Society has also used energy-efficient systems including reactive lighting, new lifts, integrated air cooling systems in offices as well as biodegradable carpet and ceiling tiles.

The Result
Peter Hill, Operations Director of Leeds Building Society commented at the outset: “Although the Head Office has been regularly updated, now is the time for a complete overhaul. We have considered a range of options but feel that staying in our existing location offers the best solution for staff and members. Leeds is very important to us and we believe it is vital that the only major independent financial services organisation with its Head Office in Leeds remains here. This solution offers the most cost effective way to improve our infrastructure and enable us to continue to deliver good value for money products backed up by excellent service.”
