"The design was considered exceptional. The pavilion knits well with the existing buildings, completing a line of them. The brief

Spirax Sarco decided a new staff catering facility was needed and had the options of either refurbishing the existing space or building a complete new facility.

The company aimed for a fresh, contemporary and flexible space that could provide a suitable eating area for staff to take their breaks and at the same time could also be used for future internal presentations and events.

The new facility also needed new café furniture and an audio visual technology solution. After a review of all available options, Spirax Sarco elected to start from scratch and build a brand new staff restaurant on the existing site. Claremont were ideally placed and appointed to undertake this work, having previously completed a number of projects at Spirax Sarco’s Charlton House head office.

The results

Claremont’s team has undertaken the design and construction of the Summerhouse building from inception to occupation. The existing timber framed building was demolished to build the new staff restaurant that also functions as a presentation and event facility. The new “Summerhouse” building allows seating for up to 150 members of staff. Floor to ceiling glass windows were used to create a light and bright space with doors opening onto a furnished veranda overlooking the adjacent landscaped gardens.

The preparation works comprised of conducting site surveys, arranging the full working drawings package, planning application and building regulation drawings. The internal works encompassed space planning, the procurement and installation of air-conditioning, lighting, decoration, flooring, bespoke joinery, café furniture, soft seating and a high specification audio visual system.

Claremont’s work for Spirax Sarco’s Summerhouse has been recognised with an award from the Cheltenham Civic Society. The ‘Well Designed New Building’ award recognises Claremont’s work as architect and main contractor during construction of the pavilion building.
